      General Information

Springhurst was founded as a school for the highly capable, creative, gifted learner. Located in Kirkland, Washington, Springhurst operated as a full-time school from 1997 until 2002. The school is currently not in operation except for special programs, but the information on this web site is available for those interested in our background. While Springhurst may reopen as a school, we are not enrolling students at this time.

Enrollment is open to children ages 4-12 years (early kindergarten through sixth grade) who show high ability in language, art, mathematics, music, or other domains. Each of our students has an individual learning plan (ILP) and portfolio to plan and record their progress. By maintaining a low student to teacher ratio, we are able to use a flexible curriculum designed to meet the needs of each individual child. In an effort to reach beyond traditional schooling, we hope to inspire and encourage student exploration and creativity. The learning that takes place at Springhurst is expected to exceed and be much more diverse than the state learning goals require. The Springhurst family — our students, parents, and staff — are excited about our school and are pleased to share it with you. Some of the pages have a printer icon (see blue bar, above) which will lead you to some options for more successful printing of our information.

On this web site you will find information about our curriculum and our students and staff, many of whom have their own pages. You can also find the latest school information by reading our news section. If you don't find what you are looking for, try our directory or you may search our site. If you are interested in more information about enrollment, please visit our admissions page. Mission Statement
Springhurst is committed to the ongoing development of gifted and creative children. This commitment is to the whole child. We are dedicated to providing a wholesome and holistic education for each student, at a level appropriate to the individual. All Springhurst students will learn.

We believe that each child has unique ways of interpreting and learning about the world. We believe that an understanding and appreciation of reality — of life — is the purpose of education. We believe that this can be gained when learners study the whole of human experience, along with the parts within it.

We believe that students learn best when they are interested in what they are learning. We believe that an inclusive, holistic curriculum can be designed with and for each student. This "ownership" of education is what the capable student needs to be an interested and growing learner. Teachers are most effective when they are facilitators of a student centered curriculum.

Always looking for ways to improve our school, we are presently raising money to expand our scholarship fund and our capital improvement fund. You can help by downloading WeatherBug, bringing us box tops, or by visiting our bookstore.
